Uniform - Guide for sewing ribbons/elastic on to ballet shoes

Your new ballet shoes will need short lengths of elastic sewn onto them to hold the
wearer's foot in the correct place. This is a simple guide to show you how to position
the ribbon/elastic correctly.

Stage 1

1

What you need:

  • Shoes
  • 2 pieces of elastic
  • needle
  • matching coloured thread

Press down on the end of a shoe to make a flat triangular shape. The arrows show where you need to attach the ribbon.

Stage 2

2

Sew down one side first.

Stage 3

3

Get the wearer to put the shoe on and guide the elastic over their foot to fit comfortably.

Stage 4 - The correct Way

4

Tip:

Inside the band that runs around the opening of the shoe is a drawstring so that the wearer can adjust the fit. Avoid sewing through it when you attach the ribbon/elastic.

Stage 4 - The incorrect way
Stage 5 Completed

5

Sew the other side, remembering the position shown in drawing 1 above.

Now repeat the entire process for the other shoe.
